Module 4 Chapter 11 - Making a Special Book or Portfolio

(1a) Sketch of portfolio idea

My idea for a portfolio is based on envelope flaps and also includes an interpretation of illuminated letters.

I liked the shape and proportions of the small mock-up portfolio, made in chapter 10 and would like to attempt this as my assessment piece.

The outside measurement would be approximately 9 inches by 12 inches, this would accommodate standard (American) size paper sheets. There would be two embroidered panels and two smaller plain flaps. The flaps would be held closed with corded ties.

The panels would be embroidered with a variety
of fibers.







The portfolio would be made from a selection of silk fabrics - an outer fabric and lining, with the panels hand stitched in place to the front flaps. The two plain flaps (top and bottom) would be attached to the back of the portfolio with tabs, which could be further embellished with decorative stitching and/or beads. The two decorated flaps could also be joined to the portfolio back with tabs, but theses may be left plain, as not to distract from the panels.


(8) A decorative tab and a boarder of prairie points, which could be used to join front flaps to the back. Machined-stitched cording is made to tie the flaps together.








A thin batting and Pellon would be sandwiched in between outer fabric and lining, to give some stability to the piece.
